The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Review

Opening

The movie starts with Rosalina about to tell a story to the star kids she calls her children—a story about her and her sister, Princess Peach. Before she gets a chance to start, she is kidnapped by Bowser Jr. Later on, the movie dives deeper into Rosalina and Peach’s backstory. It explains that their magic comes from stardust, and when they touch hands, they have the ability to summon the power of the cosmos. The story reveals that when they were younger, they were attacked, and because Peach was still just a little sister, Rosalina had to send her away for her own safety.

Throughout the Movie

After one of Rosalina’s star kids arrives in the Mushroom Kingdom, it asks Princess Peach for help to rescue Rosalina. Further into the film, Peach reads a book that confirms she and Rosalina are indeed sisters. She then continues her quest to rescue Rosalina before her power is 100% drained by a doomsday weapon. During the ultimate battle—featuring Luigi, Mario, and Yoshi vs. Bowser and Bowser Jr.—Bowser Jr. is swallowed by one of his own creations but is ultimately saved by Mario.

Ending

The rescue is a success, while Bowser falls into the lava and becomes the Dry Bowser (Skull King). The movie ends with the sisters reunited, Bowser Jr. saved, and Mario and Luigi returning to their normal lives.

However, a few storylines felt incomplete. For instance, the movie never shows Mario actually asking Princess Peach out, even though he wanted to do so earlier in the film. It also leaves massive questions for the franchise going forward, like who is Princess Peach and Rosalina's mom? What are the other family connections, like their dad? There are still a lot of blanks left to fill in both the movie franchise and the games.

Star Ratings

  • Animation: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 Stars) Throughout the entire movie, the animation and video quality are crystal clear, especially with how detailed the objects and various worlds look.

  • Character Design: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 Stars) The designs for every character looked about 15% sharper and clearer than the first Super Mario Bros. movie.

  • Effects: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5 Stars) The sound effects were 100% spot on. I give the video effects an 80% because while they weren't too scary for younger viewers, they didn't always line up 100% perfectly with the audio.

  • Ending Credits: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5 Stars) The visuals during the credits were great, but the names moved too quickly to read all the way through.

  • Storyline: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ (2/5 Stars) There were too many unanswered questions left behind, though it did feature a lot of cute individual scenes that added up to a sweet overall story.
