Walmart Customers Will Soon Be Able To Use Tap Pay

Walmart and Sam’s Club customers will soon have another payment option at checkout. Gone are the days of having to walk back to your car or leave your groceries behind because you forgot your physical card. Walmart said Friday it will begin rolling out tap-to-pay at select stores and Sam’s Club locations starting Aug. 24. Previously, customers who wanted to pay digitally could use Walmart Pay, which allows shoppers to add their card information to the Walmart app and pay at checkout. Sam’s Club members can also use the retailer’s Scan & Go feature, which allows shoppers to scan their items and pay through the app without going through a traditional checkout line. "Whether picking up groceries, gifts or everyday essentials, they can check out using eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch," Walmart said in a press release.

Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, said Friday it plans to expand tap-to-pay to all of its U.S. stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026. The company plans to add the option at fuel stations by mid-2027. Walmart also said this week it's planning to use its U.S. tariff refunds to temporarily lower prices on thousands of items, particularly on groceries and general merchandise. The company said the nearly $3 billion it received from the refunds will support investments to enhance the customer experience, backing up a sentiment made by the company in May.
